So, in the past week there appears to have been some great tiger news starting with the fact that in the recent tiger census completed in India, it is believed that the populations of tigers has increased by nearly 30% in the past 4 years which is an amazing.
The numbers stated show that the tiger population is definitely on the increase, rising from 1706 in 2011 to 2,226 in 2014. The Environment Minister believes that this increase is down to the streamline tiger initiatives that the country has been making in recent years such as reduction in human-animal conflict, community partnerships and poaching reduction and if this is true then perhaps these initiatives can be closely studies and applied in other country to help save the species.
India is homed to roughly 70% of the worlds tiger population and although populations of tigers are decreasing else where, this huge increase can only be seen in a positive way. The country has even stated that it is willing to donate tiger cubs to the international community to help play a key role in conservation efforts.
It just shows that if conservationist and governments work together, it is possible to change the fate of extinction in rare species.
All I hope is that we can learn from India and hopefully apply there methods else where. One thing we do know is that there is now some restored hope for these animals and that maybe, just maybe, they will be around a lot longer that it was once predicted!
